About Freemasonry

A brief introduction to Freemasonry, its values, and its presence in Northumberland and England.

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations. It promotes moral and personal development, encouraging its members to live by principles of integrity, friendship, respect, and charity.

Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for one. It welcomes men of all backgrounds who believe in a Supreme Being and who seek fellowship, self‑improvement, and opportunities to support charitable causes.

Freemasonry in England

In England, Freemasonry is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), founded in 1717. UGLE oversees more than 200,000 members and is recognised as the oldest Masonic Grand Lodge in the world.

UGLE promotes openness, charity, and community involvement. It is a founding partner of the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF), one of the largest charitable organisations in the UK.

Royal Arch Masonry

The Royal Arch is considered the completion of Craft Masonry. It expands on the teachings of the Craft and offers a deeper exploration of Masonic symbolism and philosophy.

Royal Arch Masonry in England is governed by the Supreme Grand Chapter, which works closely with UGLE.
